Students use motion sensors to measure the acceleration of ball bearings (or marbles) rolling down a track made of meter sticks propped up on physics books.
Materials: ball bearing (or marble), motion sensor, meter sticks, books
Students throw a ball into the air above a motion sensor and calculate the acceleration due to gravity. I use whiffle balls since they don't damage the motion sensor if they land on it. Changing projectiles can lead to more accurate values of g.
Students use a weighted strip of paper falling through a spark timer to measure the acceleration due to gravity. This lab is limited by friction between the paper and the spark timer.
Materials: spark timers, paper strips for the spark timers, weights (I use 20 g slotted masses)
